Eastern Maine Snowmobile Club

January 2009 Newsletter

Happy New Year!!!

First of all I’d like to welcome to our newest EMSC members and businesses:  Daniel Bowden, Adam, Inc. in Brewer; Peter Rines, Pete’s Lawn Care in Bangor; Anna Baglay of Eddington; Parker Smith of Brewer; Dave Rubey of Mariaville and Derrick & Anna Robertson of Holden.   We at EMSC look forward to meeting you and having you join us at club meetings and events.

Our next meeting is Sunday, January 18th, at 7:00 p.m.  Dinner is at 6:00 - Steve and I are serving beef tips, mashed potato, a vegetable, roll & butter and dessert.  Hopefully, there will be enough snow on the trails so that some of us can sled (finally) to the meeting.  Remember the club is open, with or without snow, on Friday nights.  We had a good turnout last Friday for Janet and Mike Nelligan’s spaghetti dinner. Dinner is served about 5:30/6:00.   The fire will be roaring so please join us for a game of cards or just some friendly conversation.  A sign up sheet is in the kitchen if you’d like to cook on a Friday night.

Larry will soon be asking folks to help with grooming trails.  If you have time, and would like to help out, contact Larry at 843-7813.  If this is a new experience for you, training will be provided.

As you know I send newsletters out two ways:  by e-mail and by postal service.   If you are getting the newsletter by postal service and would like to receive it by e-mail, please let me know.  You can forward your e-mail address to me at catrider550@roadrunner.com.

Congratulations to the winners of the December 300 club drawing:  $500 Jeff Horne; $200 Otis Godley; $100 Lorena Fenlason; $50 Larry Lafland; $50 Jim Lamoreau; $50 Chuck Thompson; and $50 Heather Mott.  Tickets are still available.  If you’d like to try your luck and purchase a ticket(s), contact Brent Spaulding at 989-7762.   Tickets are available the night of the meeting.

Dates to remember:

  • January 17th:  Paul Bunyan Snowmobile Club is hosting their first annual Vintage Snowmobile Ride at the Paul Bunyan Snowmobile Club House on outer Union Street in Bangor, just located past the Paul Bunyan Campground.  Coffee, juice and donuts are waiting for you at 7:30 a.m. and then the ride begins at 9:30 with the final destination of Dysarts for lunch.  You don’t need a vintage snowmobile to join in!  For more information call 478-1945 or e-mail paulbunyanscbangor@hotmail.com.
  • January 31 – February 1st:  Camp CaPella Winter Weekend:  Events are planned on and in Phillips Lake at Camp Capella and include a POLAR PLUNGE; FISHING DERBY; and SNOWMOBILE RIDE-IN.   Donations collected during this event support campers who cannot financially attend this camp.  There is a $10.00 entry fee for the fishing derby.  For more information call Dana Mosher at 843-5104.
  • February 7th:  Progressive ride.  Meet at the club at 10:30 a.m. for the first stop at the Rice’s for appetizers.  Although we had to use vehicles last year, we still had a lot of fun.  The snow fall is looking promising so far and hopefully we’ll be able to sled from location to location.  Keep your fingers crossed.  A night ride after coffee and dessert at the Garrison’s is also planned.
  • February 13-15:  Weekend Club Trip to Houlton.  12 rooms are blocked for us at the Shiretown - so book your room now (1-800-441-9421) and tell them you are with the Eastern Maine Snowmobile Club.  Anne is available to take your reservation Monday-Friday, 8-5.  This is always a fun time!

For the thrill-seekers, Black Mountain in Rumford is holding its first of three scheduled Hill Climbs on Friday, January 23rd, 6:00 p.m.  Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in both men’s and women’s classes.  Slots are filling up fast – for more information call Black Mountain of Maine 364-8977 or www.skiblackmountain.org.

Please remember to ride safe and respect landowners’ property.    See you soon.
